An 8th grade homeschool curriculum should leave a student able to show how they solved a problem, tested a claim, revised a piece of writing, and managed a longer assignment. For high school readiness, ask for the work itself: a math model with explained steps, an argument that weighs sources, a lab record that survived a failed trial, and a project plan the student can update. A course list alone cannot tell you whether those habits are taking hold.
The map below helps you inspect any Grade 8 program. It uses Grade 8 Common Core expectations and the middle-school NGSS band as reference points, then shows what those ideas look like in Sora Homeschool's shipped lessons. Your state's rules and the receiving high school's placement criteria deserve their own check.
The Grade 8 readiness map
Use these 5 checks on actual assignments, preferably from the middle and end of a unit. For each one, ask the student to point to a piece of work and explain a decision. You can do this with any curriculum.
1. Math: explain the model behind the answer
The Common Core Grade 8 math overview focuses on expressions and equations, functions, and geometry. It includes linear relationships, systems of equations, the Pythagorean Theorem, transformations, and patterns in two-variable data. That is a sharper test than asking whether a course has an “algebra” label.
Evidence to keep: one problem where the student draws or reads a graph, writes an equation for a situation, and explains what the slope or intercept means. Keep another where they use geometry to find a missing length and state how precise the answer needs to be. If a solution is wrong, ask which step first stopped matching the situation. The explanation matters as much as the corrected number.
Question to ask: “What would change in your answer if this starting value doubled?” A student who can revise the model is doing work that transfers to a new problem.
2. Reading: identify the strongest evidence
The Grade 8 literature standards call for the textual evidence that most strongly supports an interpretation, plus attention to theme, structure, and point of view. The informational reading standards ask students to evaluate reasoning, spot irrelevant evidence, and locate where two accounts disagree on fact or interpretation.
Evidence to keep: two annotated sources on the same question and a short note explaining where they agree, where they split, and which passage carries the most weight. A highlighted page is a starting point. The student's reason for choosing one passage over another is the stronger signal.
Question to ask: “What is the best evidence against your first reading?” If the student can answer fairly, the second source has actually changed the investigation.
3. Writing: show a decision between drafts
The Grade 8 writing standards ask students to build arguments with clear claims, relevant evidence, credible sources, and acknowledged opposing claims. They also call for research and revision with some adult or peer support.
Evidence to keep: a plan, first draft, feedback, and revised piece. Circle one paragraph that changed. Did the writer add a source, reorganize a reason, answer a counterclaim, or simply polish commas? All are useful, but they solve different problems.
Question to ask: “Which sentence did you change because a reader pushed back?” A student should be able to name the reader's concern and the choice they made in response. That is a more revealing conversation than asking whether the final essay got an A.
4. Science: make a fair test legible
The NGSS middle-school band covers physical science, life science, Earth and space science, and engineering. It is a band across middle school, so a Grade 8 course needn't follow one national topic order. Look for the practice running through the topics: a testable question, a model or design, measured evidence, and an explanation of what the evidence can and cannot support.
Evidence to keep: the original prediction, a table or graph with units, a note about what changed between trials, and the next version of the design. A result that loses to an earlier version can be excellent evidence if the student can explain why.
Question to ask: “What did you hold constant, and what would you test next?” If the student changed three things at once, they should be able to see why the result is hard to interpret.
5. Independence: let the student steer a bounded project
High school often asks a student to carry work across several days. For Grade 8, look for a plan with a finish line, intermediate tasks, and a way to recover when a task takes longer than expected. The adult still sets boundaries, checks sources and safety, and reviews important work.
Evidence to keep: a one-week plan beside what actually happened. Ask the student to name one adjustment and why they made it. Independence grows through those small decisions, with an adult still able to see the path.
Question to ask: “What will you do tomorrow if today's source, calculation, or prototype fails?” An answer with a next step beats a plan that assumes every attempt works.
A real Grade 8 project in the Sora Homeschool catalog

In Humanities module 1, students build a contested history exhibit about a colonized place. Their job is to put a colonizer's primary-source account beside testimony or writing from a colonized person, then write an analysis that separates disagreement about facts from disagreement about interpretation. The final week moves from an exhibit plan to a source audit, an analysis paragraph, two display panels, and a presentation to a real panel. The lesson's rubric asks whether the sources are real and captioned, whether the disagreement is sorted accurately, whether both voices are represented fairly, and whether a visitor can reach a defensible view. A parent can see the plan, audited sources, draft analysis, exhibit, and reflection.
That is a useful readiness test. The student must read conflicting evidence, decide what each source can establish, write for a visitor, and answer questions without pretending every uncertainty has vanished. The grown-up helps rehearse and reviews the finished work; the student's reasoning must remain visible.
In STEM module 8, Heat on Demand, students work from a client's needs to compare two warming or cooling designs. They record temperature curves, identify the feature behind each design's strengths, build a combined version, and present the result with a design log and one-page specification. The final panel asks what the data said, what the student gave up, and what they would change. Here again, the readiness signal is the trail: prediction, repeated measurements, comparison, revision, and a defended decision.

How to inspect a curriculum before committing
Choose one complete unit and ask the publisher for the student-facing lessons, the final assignment, and the review criteria. Work backward from the finish line. Can you see why the reading on day 2 matters to the project in week 4? Does the student practice a skill before the final assignment asks for it? Are the materials and adult handoffs clear?
Then collect 3 sample artifacts: an early attempt, a revision, and a final piece. A few well-chosen pieces of work can show whether the curriculum gives a student a chance to change their thinking. If every task is a quiz and every score is final, ask where the student learns to defend a claim or repair a weak design.
Ask about math placement separately. A Grade 8 course title does not tell you which high-school math course comes next. Compare the actual topics and student work with the receiving school's placement rules. Do the same for records: find out what the program stores, what you can export, and what the next school asks families to provide. The parent role in Grade 8
