That creates a simple curriculum test: ask what the child does after reading. Retelling the page is one skill. Quoting a detail, making an inference, comparing accounts, and defending an interpretation are stronger signs of Grade 4 work.
A balanced year should include stories, myths, poetry, drama, history, science, and technical text. It should also teach a child when to slow down, reread, use a diagram, or ask for help.
Writing: organized ideas that improve through revision
Grade 4 writers should practice opinion, informative, and narrative pieces. The Grade 4 writing standards call for clear organization, facts and details, precise vocabulary, conclusions, short research projects, note-taking, and evidence from texts. They also expect planning, revising, and editing with guidance from peers and adults.
Look for repeated small cycles: plan, draft, get feedback, revise, share. A single polished report in May won't build the habit. Short explanations in math and science count too, especially when students use numbers or observations as evidence.
By spring, a useful portfolio might contain a narrative, an opinion piece, a researched explanation, a project report, and visible before-and-after revisions. Those artifacts tell you much more than a page of percentages.
Science: investigate, measure, model, and design

The sequence is broad on purpose. The recurring skills are reading closely, locating evidence, comparing viewpoints, building an argument, and communicating it clearly.
A real sample week: The Bridge Challenge
A sample week should expose the work, the assessment, and the adult handoff. Sora Homeschool's shipped Grade 4 STEM course ends its first module with a 5-lesson Bridge Challenge. The student has already studied compression, tension, bridge families, strong shapes, fair tests, criteria, constraints, and community needs.
Monday: define the problem
The student chooses a real or imagined gap, names who needs the bridge, and writes 2 or 3 measurable criteria plus 2 or 3 constraints. “It should be strong” gets sanded into something testable, such as “It must span 20 centimeters and hold 25 coins.”
Tuesday: draw the blueprint
The student chooses a beam, arch, truss, or suspension design and draws a labeled plan. The blueprint shows the span, main parts, materials, and where weight will push or pull. The student then explains why that bridge type fits the problem.
Wednesday: build the model
Using household or recycled materials, the student turns the blueprint into a model that stands on its own and crosses the chosen gap. Strong shapes and tight joints matter more than decoration. A grown-up helps gather materials and protects the workspace; the design decisions stay with the child.
Thursday: test, improve, and test again
The student predicts a result, loads the bridge slowly with identical weights, records the first result, finds one weak spot, makes one change, and repeats the same test. The submission requires 2 numbers and a claim backed by those numbers.
That last detail matters. “My bridge got better” is vague. “It held 18 coins, then 31 after I added diagonal braces” is evidence.
Friday: write and present
The student tells the full engineering story: problem, design, first test, improvement, second test, and next step. The week closes with a parent-led checkpoint where the child presents the bridge and answers questions.
The materials stay ordinary: a model bridge, 20 to 40 coins or matching blocks, tape, an optional cup for loose weights, and an optional ruler. The intellectual work is in the test design, measurements, revision, and explanation.

How much independence is realistic in Grade 4?
A 4th grader can increasingly open a lesson, follow a sequence, gather familiar supplies, record work, and flag a confusing step. Adult support still matters for discussion, safety, feedback, and pacing.
